Simon Furman Interviewed

by Big Bot on January 29, 2008

TFW2005 have sat down with comic writer Simon Furman and discussed his work on Transformers comics, but also his views on the Transformers movie, and how he feels it should have been done.

TFW2005: (Further along the expanded universe angle) Are there any possibilities to seeing any stories from Transformers past or Transformers future that would have all new characters we have never seen before (no Optimus, no Megatron, no G1 homages, etc)?

Simon Furman: There’s always that potential I suppose, and we are going right back in time for The Thirteen, which features a (largely) new cast of characters we’ll be building from the ground up. Not sure about the future. I don’t really want to do an animated TF movie thing and scrap everything in favour of a new cast. There’s so much potential in the present day cast still to explore in new and different ways. That’s where my creative energies are focused right now.

IDW Publishing have put up their solicitations for April, with only 3 Transformers comics planned for the month.

The first and most exciting title is Transformers Movie Sequel: The Reign of Starscream #1, which picks up from where the Transformers movie left off.

The other 2 titles are Marvel UK reprints. The Transformers: Best of the UK: Dinobots #6 is the final issue in the series and features a bonus and Transformers: Best of the U.K.: Space Pirates #2 continues the Space Pirates story.

Full details can be found below with the covers, including an unseen one from The Reign of Starscream, on IDW’s site.

The official continuation of the blockbuster TRANSFORMERS movie begins here! When MEGATRON falls in battle, STARSCREAM assumes the role of DECEPTICON leader on Earth. Mustering his surviving allies, he sets out to put his own plan in motion. But before he can do that, he’ll need to retrieve a fallen comrade, carry out a plan of revenge, and leave the Earth to meet up with a major player in the DECEPTICON army. Picking up where the film ended, “The Reign of Starscream” also reveals the fates of other surviving film characters, as co-writers Chris Ryall (Transformers Movie Prequel) and Chris Mowry present a tale of intrigue, betrayal, and dark ambition featuring both old and all-new TRANSFORMERS characters. Featuring art from fan-favorite illustrator Alex Milne (Transformers Movie Adaptation) and covers by Milne and Gabriel Rodriguez (Locke & Key). Ask your retailer how to get a variant cover by James Raiz, too!
