Oil Pan. Who thought of that name? Or thought it would be a good one to use? Oil pan is a repaint of ROTF Breakdown. I like the mould, so was happy to fork out for it again. Was I right to do so? Well, no.
Sometimes with Hasbro’s repaints, something happens in the manufacturing process to make the mould look weak and fallible. Maybe it’s the plastics they use for some of these things. Where Breakdown was a solid, well engineered toy, Oil Pan feels cheap, his plastics look opaque and nearly all his joints are loose and prone to popping off. I’ve lost count of how many times I’ve pulled his arms and legs off just transforming him. Speaking of which, this is still a nice sequence, with the car twisting and rotating about to form the robot mode. Shame it can’t be done without bits falling off.
The application of white paint to the alt mode is a mistake. Whilst it doesn’t look bad, it looks like he’s just had his sides tippexed and the more solid white paint is too harsh against those weak looking orange plastics. Likewise, that white face really sticks out in robot mode. The use of purple plastic for the robot parts is nice though. Stick to Breakdown.
