Only three Dinobots made it into Generation 2, Grimlock, Slag and Snarl. Each of them were released in three different colours. As well as the traditional grey, Snarl was released in red then green, Slag in green then red, and Grimlock in blue then teal. The second colour is the rarest variant colour, although finding Generation 2 Dinobots in grey is also something of a task these days. To make these toys safe for a new generation (arf!), the missile launchers were not included with these releases, and the Energo Swords were made of hard, rather than soft plastic.

Apart from the obvious change in colour, Snarl is identical in transformation to his 1980s counterpart. However, the figure uses these new plastics that Hasbro seemed to have been trialling throughout Generation 2. As well as feeling waxy, they also seem to lack strength. Snarl feels very fragile and as you can see, I have had to swap out the interior leg panels after part of the leg assembly just collapsed through repeated play.

So, does Snarl benefit from his 1990s makeover? Well, not really. Although the toy itself is still a great figure, with some excellent detailing and design work, the blanket use of red is a little overpowering. Maybe if the traditional red chest had been painted a different colour it would make a difference. As with the Generation 2 Aerialbots, the use of cheaper plastics and bright colours do have the unfortunate side effect of making the toys look like cheap knock offs.
