Now here’s a repaint that enhances a character and a mould! Generation 2 Sideswipe is a sharp looking redeco of his 1980s self (unlike the unimaginative changes made to Inferno and Jazz, the only other Autobot cars singled out for inclusion into the Generation 2 relaunch), albeit by just simply reversing the colours, and because it’s the 1990s, adding in some eye catching neon (cheers for that). The only thing that really spoils Sideswipe’s appearance are those wretched ‘SS’ and ‘Side Swipe’ factory applied decals – an annoying trend for Generation 2 which involved blowing the disguise element clean out the water with decals and tampographs that shout the toy’s presence to all and sundry. The bold change to Sideswipe was also reflected in his grandstanding performance in the opening salvo of the superb Generation 2 comic (indeed, practicalities notwithstanding, I would love a Sideswipe with spiked wheels!).
Sideswipe is one of the less taxing Transformers to transform. He’s effectively a car standing up holding a gun. A simple sequence, but sometimes that’s all you need.Although Sideswipe comes with his original gun, his missile launcher has been replaced by an unfeasibly large hand held gun. In neon green. That launches a blue missile. The figure doesn’t half look daft brandishing this thing in his hand, and it is no more successful pegged into the roof of the vehicle mode for a daft looking attack mode (this also requires you applying quite a bit of pressure to the most fragile part of the car, which isn’t terribly clever).
Previously lost in the glut of Autobots released in 1984, and so bland you’d be hard pressed to find anyone interested in him, his 1993 update brings him centre stage and sharpens up a design that looked tired at the time. In some respects, it’s a pity that like a lot of 1990s toys, the use of ferocious neon colours dates him quicker than his original 1980s release - boxy looking sports car alt mode aside.
