Hubcap seems to me to be one of those slightly forgotten toys these days. Forever confused in online listings as the yellow Cliffjumper (he’s not – Cliffjumper’s vehicle mode has a rear spoiler and the head sculpt is different). Worse still, for his Generation 2 outing, he was actually coloured red, rather than the traditional yellow. There’s some thought that this is because a re-release of Cliffjumper was intended, but the mould was unavailable at the time. To add insult to injury, he also lost out to Bumblebee in the recent Encore resissue of the 1986 Minibots.
His Generation 2 outing is a bit of a mess. The gaudy, bauble-coloured red looks awful and the fleshy pink face gives the unfortunate impression of an ill-advised cosplayer. The mould hasn’t aged well and as with the other ‘Penny Racer’ mini-vehicles, his tyres are prone to cracking and splitting with age. A disappointing toy for a disappointing character.
