Rhinox is one of those slightly unremarkable characters that every toyline spits out. It's not that there's anything wrong with him per se, it's just that solid, dependable characters just don't win you over with instant appeal. Or, larger characters like Rhinox are just presented as dumb muscle (hello Animated Bulkhead), so it made a refereshing change to see a smart, savvy giant on a kids show. Always in the background of the Maximal's struggles with Megatron's Predacons, Rhinox provided vital technical, medical and back up support to his team. Easily the most capable member of the Maximal team, it's actually quite frightening to realise how easily Megatron would have beaten the Maximals if Rhinox weren't there. Indeed, Megatron seemed to be more aware of what an asset Rhinox is, whereas the Maximals seemingly took Rhinox for granted...

As a toy, Rhinox, as his name suggests, is a rhinoceros. The toy is a very nice realisation of a rhino. There are some excellent skin textures and 'folds' mimicking the almost armour-plated nature of a rhino's hide. The beast has a suitably fierce looking in face and some angry looking eyes. The paint apps are nicely applied, although I'm not too sure about the golden horn (insert your own joke here). There's no real articulation in beast mode, you can move his legs about a little but not in any useful fashion.

Rhinox robot mode is a bit of a kibble-fest, with beast parts dangling about all over the shop. This does hinder his mobility somewhat, but the bulk and feel of all that kibble does feel necessary and important to the character (even leaving aside what we know from the TV show). This is probably due to the rather brutal weaponry that Rhinox wields; a rather large sword and that mace/blade machine gun combo. You can't really picture say, Cheetor, handling these weapons. Neatly, all the various weapon components are stored in various parts of Rhinox body. As with all the early Beast Wars toys, Rhinox has a mutant head. This I much prefer over the slightly thin and flat looking robot head. The bulk of the mutant head just suits that hulking body that bit better. Plus those wings that are created from splitting open the mutant head just serve to clutter up an already busy robot mode.

In terms of colour, Rhinox has a slightly jarring mix of tan and bright green in robot mode. It's a bit of a clashing colour scheme, but the addtiion of gold and black does help break this up a bit. The transformation is nicely excuted, although you do find the kibble does get in the way a bit when handling.

Like Rhinox himself, the toy is a solid, dependable addition to the range. He wont quicken many pulses, but thanks to those nifty weapons and that hulking demeanour, he is very much worth investigating.
