Armordillo was one of those toys I picked up having quickly bought all the Predacon figures (easily the best of the initial slew of Beast Wars toys) and grudgingly moved onto the Maximals. That’s not to say there’s anything particularly wrong with Armordillo, just that more could have been made of him. Particularly when you think how awesome the character art for the character is compared to the actual toy.

As with all Beast Wars Basics, Armordillo is a flip changer. Lifting his tail up will cause him to transform to robot mode. His beast mode is okay, it is nicely detailed and the plating on his back is well executed and the snarling face is great, it’s just that, well, he’s just a bit too orange. There is an attempt to break up the monotony by giving him a deep blue wash down the centre of his back and top of his head, but its a bit weak and half hearted, just making him look dirty. Once flipped into robot mode, you unpeg the rear legs and mount them onto the forearms to form some rather medieval looking melee weapons. Whilst the weaponry itself is very nicely designed and realised, having those feet dangle off the back of them does look a bit poor. The blandness of the blanket use of orange is also carried over to the robot mode, making him look a bit cheap and dull next to his Maximal brethren. It’s a shame really, because it’s not as if Armordillo doesn’t have a lot going for him. He has a nicely detailed sculpt and grimacing face (even if those rolls at the side of his head make him look like he’s wearing a judge’s wig) and is decently poseable. He just looks dull. Mind you, it’d take even the Japanese until 2004’s RobotMaster’s line and Pyscho Orb to make this mould look like it would be something worth bothering with.
