In the early days of the Beast Wars toyline, some toys worked out better than others. One of the early challenges the designers faced was how to successfully incorporate a robot mode into various different beast forms. Waspinator struggled a little with that, as those rather obvious rear insect/ robot legs evidence. I also puzzled over why Waspinator was coloured green for many years, having never heard of a Cuckoo Wasp.

Waspinator is one of the cruder toys of the early days of the line. The plastics have an odd papery feel - much like you find on many a bootleg toy - and the painted sting looks a little like its been done with poster paint. The pearl coloured opaque wings and missiles are a nice touch though. There's also some nice detailing on the body to replicate the flesh of a real wasp.

Transforming Waspinator isn't taxing, it's pretty much the Wasp stood on its tail. The robot mode is a good, solid effort. There's the usual level of articulation to allow for some very cool poses. The mutant head (used in the TV show) is a cute little thing. The rounded mandibles and other details are slightly lost on the sea of grey, but its still got bags more character than the rather generic robot head. There's some neat missile storage in the wings, and these can be launched from the launcher that's hidden in Waspinator's behind (!).

Waspinator is an undemanding figure and a solid addition to the range. He's not outstanding by any means and as a toy probably owes his popularity to his on screen persona, rather than through any merits as a toy.
