Death's Head

Another example of the tooled up good guy, B'Boom is another one of those gun toting characters that make you question just how 'good' the Maximals and their forefathers actually were. As bad as some of the bad guys seem, chaps like this seem even worse!
A terrible pun on 'Baboon', B'Boom is actually, er, a mandrill. He fits into the 'mega' size class (what would today be a Voyager scale figure) It's a very good likeness of the brute, and captures that slightly dangerous look mandrill's have (I wouldn't be picking on these creatures because they have a funny coloured face and a bright pink bottom). Rendered in a really nice metallic blue, B'Boom also has some really nice etched panels evoking hairs - even on those slightly clumsy looking folded up parts that run down the sides of the torso. The detailing also carries over to the feet, which also have nicely sculpted toes - with nails! The level of detail on B'Boom is astonishing and he's definitely one of the best looking Beast Transformers out there.
Whilst in Beast Mode, B'Boom also has something of a suprise attack mode. Pressing his ear in opens his mouth and launches a missile - and makes his eyes boggle. Unintentionally amusing maybe, but a good refining of the same gimmick wielded by the deluxe sized Bonecrusher.
As with his opposite number Transquito, B'Boom also has an intermediate 'attack mode'. A very angry looking four legged weapons platform! It basically consists of jiggling the limbs about and splitting the body down the middle and opening it out. It's a funny looking thing, all told, but looks like a nasty bit of kit to be facing and you'd soon stop laughing when a volley of missiles and blaster fire comes your way.
The robot mode is also one of the best of the line. A fearsome looking thug, with grimacing face and mohawk (quite possibly what Mr T would look like were he a Transofrmer!). Transforming him to robot mode is nicely executed, with only the missile pods that flank the chest taking a bit of thought to get in place. As ever with the Beast Wars figures, the toy has a great amount of articulation and movement, thanks to a whole mess of ball and swivel joints. He does suffer a little from having slightly odd proportions thanks to those slightly long arms. The hands are a little awkward too, but he holds that cannon of his just fine. Some neat weapon storage in his back adds to his soldiery appearance.
After the simplicity of the similarly simian Optimus Primal, B'Boom is a pleasing step up from that earlier, slightly more cruder design. One the very best figures in the range, B'Boom should be near the top of your list when starting a Beast Wars collection.
