Death's Head

Is Powerpinch the greatest Beast Wars basic toy? Quite possibly. He's a suitably creepy looking earwing. The realism of the toy is there in the toy, if not the slightly bright colour scheme (transulcent, rather than solid cast orange parts - or even brown would have been a better fit). The thing is a mess of creepy legs and those huge forceps. He looks fantastic. Rather than being black, the main body is actually a very nicely rendered deep clear green. The beast mode also mimics the real thing, with a moveable abdomen which you can swing up and activate the forceps, which is a great touch. It's the only moveable part of the insect form, but it's a good one!
Powerpinch goes through a nicely complex sequence to get to robot mode. Whilst the arms are fairly obviously formed from the head of the insect, the torso and legs are formed by swinging the robot legs through the body of the insect and down into position. It's a really clever sequence and works suberbly. Puzzling then that when a similar sequence was chosen for Transmetal 2 Sonar, Kenner made a bit of a mess of it.
The robot mode that results is beautiful. The two tone green/black and orange is highlighted by some excellent paint apps - some careful swipes of silver is all its taken to sharpen up an already great looking figure. Powerpinch doesn't have hands as such, just a gruesome set of mandibles and feelers for fingers (imagine that coming at you - urgh!). He can wield the forceps as a kind of pincer weapon and has one of the best head sculpts in the range.
One of the very best toys of its day, Powerpinch is an impressive figure that holds up well even against similar size class toys of today.
