Death's Head

This dude is one of my favourite Beast Wars toys – a creepy, detailed looking dragonfly that turns into an equally creepy looking robot. The beast mode is one of the very best of the line. The body is perhaps a little too bulky, but it nevertheless captures the look and feel of the creature on which it is based. It's mostly back with some flashes of a fleshy neon orange, with metallic greens and blues thrown in. The limbs and wings are adjustable and he throws in a couple of good action features to the mix.
Pressing the green panel on the toy's back flips two missile launchers forward. Push that green tab on the tail forward and dip the head in some water and pull back on the tab. The mechanism sucks up some water which you can then squirt (using the same tab) at your enemies! Good fun - although if you keep it up, it will end up rusting the screws on the figure, which is the only downside.
The transformation is another winner for the line. The legs unclip from the underside of the insect mode and drop down out of the way. Flip the insect legs back and lower the robot feet and swivel the legs around. The robot arms unclip from the sides of the insect's head and swing down. The robot torso folds down and forward from the body of the insect body. The robot legs/ hips then swing up and clip into the torso, leaving the tail of the insect out at a 45 degree angle from the body. Position the wings as you see fit, and there you have it.
From the relatively black insect mode you get a suprisingly colourful robot mode that brings that fleshy orange and the greens to the fore. It is quite an horrific palette of colour, but it suits the figure to a tee. The various ball and swivel joints give the limbs a superb range of movement. Although he is a little back heavy, thanks to the insect tail, he is able to stand in a variety of poses without toppling over. It also acts as a support for the figure too - er, should you have a particularly loose example of the toy.
The sculpt is very nicely detailed, with a suitably fearsome robot head (that can still utilize the water squirting feature!) and textured robot parts that carry over the look of the insect mode. His two pronged clawed fingers might not be the most practical of apendages, but they make good of doubling up to form the insect mandibles - as well as giving your enemies a very British sweary hand gesture. For added fun, the missile launchers can also be activated in robot mode, so he can take out any Maximals attacking from the air.
Easily one of the very best figures from the range and like a lot of Beast Wars toys, can be found relatively inexpensively secondhand.
