"I'm a rat with wheels! Cool."

The newly blinged-up Rattrap is a big improvement over his original form. Particularly in terms of the beast form. Despite being mostly robotic in Beast mode, he somehow looks more like a rat than his original toy - most of which is down to that awesome snarly face! The shape of the creature is more realistic and the headsculpt is a huge improvement over his original form. There's also the clever incorporation of parts that will form his transport mode into the animal's muscle structure, the rear wheels making a simple, cartoon like representation of how a real rat's hind legs work - all slightly hunched up. As with all the Transmetal figures, the level of detail is phenomenal. Engine parts, hoses, various panels, rivets and joints are visible all the the body. There's only the back of the toy that isn't so well executed. Rattrap's backside is very flat and the tail is clearly held by one of the robot arms poking out. Not that this matters, as unless you're weird, you're not going to be spending an inordinate amount of time staring at his arse.

The transport mode is enormous fun. Flip down the wheels and pop out the exhaust pipes and off he goes! As with all the Transmetals (save possibly Rampage), the transport mode is a silly bit of nonsense, but is strangely charming. I think proper vehicle modes would have looked wrong on these Beast-era figures. whilst the wheels are functional and Rattrap will roll around quite nicely on them, they don't move as freely as they would on a regular vehicular Transformer.

Rattrap is a shellformer. All his robot parts are tucked away underneath the beast form. Aside from some jiggling with the rat's legs and head, he pretty much unfolds and clips together from the base of the toy. One appreciable difference between the toy and the animation model is that the top of the rat's body doesn't rotate through 180 degrees so those larger rear wheels are by his shoulders. One wonders whether this was just an indulgence of the animators at Mainframe to make his transformation a little more dynamic or whether an early prototype actually featured this particular process. Either way, what we finish up with is still a cool little figure.

Rattrap's robot form is a nice, muscly thing with hairs sculpted into every limb. There's a lovely bit of design in the legs. They are actually fixed at those angles to facilitate balance - were the legs straight, the weight of all that back kibble would just topple him over. There's also the slightly disgusting intestinal design work and the carry over of the exposed brain tissue (!) from his earlier Basic sized toy. Although largely rendered in grey, the plastics have a pearl-like quality to them which gives Rattrap a bit extra zing that regular grey plastics wouldn't have given him. The tail weapon is pretty cool, but it's a shame he doesn't come with a hand gun anymore.

A great sculpt, simple transformation and a superb representation of the character.
