Death's Head

The Transformers equivalent of Spongebob’s Patrick Starfish, Sludge is a big, simple, dope. Thinking about it, Grimlock’s warriors must have an interesting back story that’s yet to be explored. Although ostensibly the Autobot’s muscle, they are an interesting bunch of social misfits. I’m sure there is a great ‘how the band got together’ tale waiting to be told. How else do you explain how such an oddball bunch team exists?
Sludge vies with Snarl for the title of favourite Dinobot in my affections. His huge, lumbering brontosaurus form is marvellous, a nice flash of chrome and gold breaking up the grey. He can move his back legs in this form, but due to the need to tuck his robot mode arms somewhere, he can’t really move those front legs, which is a pity. He can open and close his jaw and those teeth of his are surprisingly sharp!
Transformation follows a similar pattern to Slag and Grimlock, but in order to split the back open and form those ‘wings’, you have to manoeuvre the front legs above the robot mode’s head to get those out of the way. As with Slag, the robot mode legs do seem a little bit cumbersome, but Sludge is better proportioned and able to carry off larger lower legs without looking ridiculous. Kibble is kept to a minimum, with the dino head/neck hanging down his back and kept from view by a decently sized torso and those big silver ‘wings’. Sludge probably has the best robot form out of all the Dinobots, looking the least compromised by his design. He comes with a sword, rifle and missile launcer. The latter of which is very feeble indeed. He also has a suprising amount of articulation for his age – his waist swivels, his arms bend in at the wrists and elbows (he can facepalm!) and can bend at the knee.
In terms of overall execution, Sludge is probably the best Dinobot. He’s the one least compromised by his design, has some good proportions and a tough and powerful looking robot mode that’s matched by his alternate mode.
