It puzzles me that Sunstreaker and Sideswipe were painted as ‘brothers’ in Transformers fiction. A shared alt mode aside, Sunstreaker towers over Sideswipe and looks so different to him that if I were part of his family, I’d be questioning whether I was adopted.

Sunstreaker is a bright yellow Lamborgini Countach with ‘Turbo Tuning’ (or big engine bit, to the less mechanically inclined like me). I’d be curious as to what this ludicrous engine does to improve vehicle performance, or whether it’s just a bit of cock swinging aggrandising. Anyway, I like it. Its slightly longer than Sideswipe’s Countach alt mode, and looks a little more boxy too. The only thing that strikes me as odd is those red panels at the back of the car, but I suppose it’s better than yellow stickers, which would look rubbish. The cockpit can open to reveal a seat for a driver (a throwback to the toy’s heritage as part of the Diaclone toyline). I can remember those tiny Zoids figures being currency in the playground for this very purpose! The big failing of the toy is the slightly needless rear chasis panel, which covers the arms. This thing rarely stays in place and frequently comes away from the vehicle body thus scraping on the ground and providing a hindrance to movement and is a constant annoyance.

Transforming Sunstreaker is easy. He legs pull down and the bonnet separates to form the feet, the arms fold out of the rear (arranged in a similar fashion to Jazz and the Fairlady Z figures). His head pops out of the engine at the rear and the cockpit moves up and swings into place to form the chest. As with most Transformers of this era, Sunstreaker requires his fists/ missiles attaching. Sunstreaker’s robot mode isn’t so great. It’s very flat looking, and looks more like a car standing up than his own brother. The firing mechanisms in his wrists have been significantly neutered to the point where they just hold his missiles/ fists in place. The slightly low slung shoulders do require those blocky missile pods to improve the look of him too (one of mine is slightly damaged, before you ask). Not one of the best of the early toys, and not really different enough to be of particular interest. Being one of only three Autobot cars without an official reissue makes Sunstreaker something of a rare commodity, but be wary of paying high prices for him as he is distinctly mediocre.
