Roughstuff! Not the 1990 hit from Adam Ant (top five in Germany, pop pickers), but the sinister looking weapons transport from the Micromaster sub group. Resembling something akin to a futuristis take on Onslaught’s alt mode, Roughstuff hauls the massive missile launcher trailer. It’s a funny looking thing, simultaneously looking like a weapons transport and a bunch of jumbled parts. The tiny cab is rather dwarfed by the trailer (a fault of nearly all the various Micromaster transports). The balance of greys, blues and greens accented with black work very well though.

The trailer detatches from and opens up to form a sort of jet thing. As is probably painfully obvious, the wings fold down from the sides, the nose cone folds out of the front and the smaller black cannons are just rearranged on the back to allow the black support bar to wiggle about and accommodate Roughstuff himself. As a jet mode, it doesn’t look half bad, but standing Roughstuff in it looks like he’s on a demented roller coaster cart.

Roughstuff himself is not the greatest of the Micromaster toys. Removing him from the trailer reveals a barely (as in not at all) robot head and legs clearly formed out of the back of the tractor cab. He kind of looks like he’s sleeping off a heavy night at Maccadam’s. The robot mode involves you just standing up the cab really. Most of which hangs uncomfortably off the back of the figure, making him look hunched and slightly deformed. Despite looking a bit rubbish, Roughstuff is a brilliant play thing. I love tootling him along in missile transdport mode, then having him transform to his aircraft mode and rain down death from above. Good fun!
