Death's Head

Aah, these arriving in the post the other week took me back. I remember picking these fellows up in Austria on a family holiday back in 1989. I thought they were pretty cool at the time, and they remain so now. Strange that I seemed to have carelessly misplaced mine over the years. But thanks to the magic of ebay, they are mine again! So, Flak, Sidetrack, Bigshot and Sunrunner. Amusingly potrayed as unswerving loyal soldiers in Dreamwave's Micromaster comic book (one of the few sequences in that bloody book I could actually make out), as perhaps befits their alternate modes, they are nicely placed amongst the Autobot Micromaster ranks for defensive and offensive capabilities.
Each of the vehicle modes are superbly detailed, although Sunrunner's aircraft mode does look a little too cute in part thanks to those stumpy little propellers and rounded nose cone. Big Shot wins extra points for having a nice turret that moves through 360 degrees. The other two formed two tanks, but not the turreted kind. Flak is a multi missile launcher tank and Sidetrack an anti aircraft tank. As with all the Micromaster teams, transformation is quick and easy resulting in some very nice little robots. Each of them are superb little figures. Sunrunner looks the most dynamic, with Sidetrack being a very slick looking dude. Bigshot has a nice, tough commanding look about him and I like that the fin on his head looks like a Mohawk. Only Flak, the green and yellow tank looks a little malformed. His head his huge and although the arms are actually in proportion to the body the wheels on the end make them look longer than they are leaving Flak looking quite simian.
Because of the more realistic military colours picked out for the Battle Patrol, they nudge it over the following years' Decepticon Military Squad in terms of realism and are easily the best of the Micromaster teams from 1989.
