I like the Fuzors. They are a mixed bunch and not the most loved part of the Beast Wars toyline, but I’ll take these guys over pish like the Micro Playsets and goofy oddballs Heinrad and Moon that the Japanese iteration of Beast Wars spat out. The Fuzors were a neat idea on paper, the fusion of two different beast forms to create a fearsome creature to add a new dimension to the Beast Wars. It was just the choices they made that scuppered this subline.

Airhammer here is a prime example of the folly of some the Fuzor figures. A fusion of a hammerhead shark and an eagle it just looks goofy and silly, plus: another bloody hammerhead shark – couldn’t we have had a tiger or great white shark instead? No, we have to put up with the boggle eyed weirdness of the hammerhead to make a daft combination look even more ugly. Well done Kenner. The only plus points (such as they are) come in the shape of a spring loaded snapping jaw -which you have to watch out for as it’s quite vicious- and some poseable legs. Although a moderately detailed sculpt, its all washed out by all that white. What paint applications there are haven’t adhered to the plastic very well, giving Airhammer the overall appearance of a bootleg.

The robot mode doesn’t improve matters not least because whilst the jaw of the shark making a suitable appendage, the tail fin as a hand is just embarrassing. Just what is the poor guy supposed to do with that? Slap people? Wave? Its rubbish. The bird legs are fine as feet, but nothing imaginative has been done with the wings which are just a huge fixed piece. It’s equivalent to all those terrible aircraft-based Transformers that have the entirety of the robot mode tucked up under the body of the jet.

Not a great entry in the line, Airhammer is hamstrung by an ugly and comical design without the benefit of a decent robot mode and transformation to make him a bit more interesting.
