Death's Head

Scavenger is a proper mental b*stard. I say this after minutes of careful research. Cracking this guy out of his box (US packaging with full tech spec and everything bought on my very first visit to a Toys R Us store at the ripe old age of, er, 20, after a thrilling trip to Ikea) for the first time in a few years, I was pleased to see he remains as gloriously bonkers as I remember. He is a toy of character, but not the in the same way that people who are irritating buffoons get labelled a ‘character’.

As with Inferno, Scavenger is a rather large fire ant. Albeit one that looks like is staggered out of some ‘50s B-Movie (think ‘Them’). He’s a lovely, creepy spindly looking creature. The colours and finishes are fantastic too. A suitably menacing combination of blood red, copper, silvery (that’s silver – not fecking grey as you get these days) robot bits and marvellous metallic segmented eyes. Although a Mega sized figure (Voyager in today’s money), he doesn’t have the density of detail as the Deluxe sized Transmetals, but he’s still pretty fierce looking. Thanks to a bounty (not the chocolate bar) of ball and socket joints, he’s super poseable. A couple of lovely extra touches are the wiggly antennae and the opening and closing mandibles.

The intermediate drill tank is a bit of a failure, if only because there’s nowhere for the robotic ant limbs to go and no matter how you arrange them, they still look like an accident in a paperclip factory. It’s still jolly fun though as when you push him along … the drills rotate! I know! Amazing, isn’t it? Well, I thought it was a pretty cool feature. From this it’s a few quick twists to the robot mode, including a really nice bit where you open up the back of the insect and unfold the legs and head. ‘Tis a thing of beauty.

And then you have it. One of the most dynamic and batsh*t crazy looking robots out of the entire line. All leery evil grin, massive horns and impractical drill hands. You’d know about it if he came at you with them. It’d be like something out of Driller Killer with you looking like a bowl of spaghetti Bolognese by the time he got done with you. A grim thought, but then Scavenger invites grim thoughts because he just looks wrong. Like he’s sick in the head. You can easily imagine him leaping and pirouetting around his victims, so lithe does he look, before he has at them with those drills of his. Scary stuff.
