depends what conunity your talking about, it kinda changes for each one. i'll try and say this as accuratly as possibe, but it might be a mix of a few conuinties. ok here i go:

when the allspark hit cybeytron it created 2 giant transformers, good and evil, primus and unicron. they fought for a millenia over who would rule their planet, until primus used the alspark to create the therteen, the first primes, led by prima. Primus and the thirteen battled unicron and, eventully, defeated him. after unicron was gone the allspark started creating transformers from the well of the allspark, primus left the thirteen in charge and resided into vector sigma. it continued that way with the thirtten leading for a long time, until one of the thirteen, megatronus prime betrayed the 13 to try and resurect unicron. megatronus gained a small band of followers, but was ultimately defeated by the thirteen and there followers. megatronus became known as the fallen, the first decepticon; he was locked in a sachocagus and exiled into space.
many more years past and prima past his leadership down, in the form of the hilt of his star saber, the matrix of leadership, to his sucsessor, prima nova. many autobots were elected primes, but the matrix bearer was the leader of the transformers. many more years past and cybertron became overcrowded and energon was at a low. a yong data clerk named orion pax had a solution to the crisis, and the primes saw good in him, but he was up against a gladiator, who had his own ideas.
the primes chose orion as there next leader, and the gladiator was enraged, and his true plans came out. He named himself after megatronus prime and planed to take leadership by force, megatron quickly gained an army of followers, and a civil war broke out. after years of fighting, the newly elected orion pax had become a prime after the last matrix holder had been defeated, orion became optimus prime, after the effects of the war, the last prime.
after the fighting stoped both factions had realised what they'd done; cybertron was a dead planet. with no life-souce left the alspark left cybertron, the transformers only hope.
the autobots and decepticons left cybertron to follow the alspark, and they found it on a planet called, earth. this i where there new battle would start. battle for the alspark.

if your talking about ones in the film, 6 dead, in the tombe of the primes, 1, the fallen, and 2 more, optimus and sentinel, so 9 mentioned in the film, maybe 10, i cant remember if theres 6 or 7 of them in the tombe of the primes, but im thinking the anime version of transformers is very different from the films?

yeah my mate said 13 but....when they were all fighting over the matrix of leadership thoes were all primes right? because there were definately more than 13

and a question if megatron is optimus' brother then doesnt that mean megatron is a prime too or does the fact hes a decepticon just cancel that out

its just the fact megatron is optimus' brother i thought it would mean he was a prime but i just thought being evil and such canceled that out somehow

Megatron isn't Optimus' brother in any reality. Perhaps one referred to the other as brother once, but only in an idealogical sense, not biological (or technological, in a robot's case).

bummer would be much better if they were brothers hmmm......wow optimus you really shouldn't have given him the satisfaction of calling him brother aswell
