    Transformers and Drones

Presently I have been think a lot about transformers franchise and the expanded universe of fiction and back stories.

I am interested in knowing the what are and or were the population numbers of transformers during the great war?

Additionally and more importantly are the enemy bot characters in games such as War for Cybertron real transformers or mindless drones? If there were drones and not true transformers, whats the difference?

I don't think any population numbers have ever been cited, but given the size of the characters, they're what, 10x the size of a human roughly, and yet Cybertron's been slated as being about the size of our moon (sometimes) it's fairly safe to say that the population will be significantly less than that of Earth.....(although, it doesn't seem to have many, if any, inhospitable areas, such as deserts or oceans....)

As for drones, I think, in the games they're supposed to be drones, and have only been included to save killing 'real' characters.

the difference, well, drones are as you say 'mindless' whereas 'real' transformers have fully formed personalities.

Drones don't seem to have sparks, either and are just preprogrammed Transformers bodies (which may or may not tie into the whole Protoforms without Sparks or 'blanks' thing, whereby such forms can be used to stamp a template roboform onto).

The thing that interests me are that Drones aren't always drones. Take the vehicons in TF:Prime - they talk (and in different voices too) they fear, they plot independant of instructions from above. They are essentially just regular Transformers.

I like to think of them like Star Wars storm troopers. Or seekers. Clones but not necessarily drones.

I guess I just answered a completely different question lol but it's an interesting point

drones are cloned transformers that have been stripped down and as stated made mindless machines used for war so they are basically mindless transformers at a weaker simpler state

There's no reason why a Drone has to be a complete Drone. Some show semi sentience.

I think the drones in Transformers are ture robots with sophisticated A.I.s to give them sufficient autonomy to be effcient in their tasks. Which generally seem to be functional/ mundane tasks or those (potentially) the situation is too risky for a sparked Transformer. I'm thinking along the lines of the synthetic humanoids seen in the Aliens films. The drones can think and feel but they are not truly 'alive', which may explain Prime Megatron's casual disregard for these production line troops.
