Well, when a mummy robot and a daddy robot love each other....

Then again, it could also be down to naturally occurring gears and pulleys (see issue 1 of the Marvel comic for details).

As far as I know, there is no difinitive answer. It might be that they are naturally occurring silicon based lifeforms, like humans are carbon based. As of the 86 movie, they were created by the Quintessons, as labourers and an army. The cartoon has various methods of creation. The Dinobots are simply built by Wheeljack, the combaticons are created by starscream from old military vehicles, the constructicons have 3 origins, while later creations require Optimus's creation Matrix to give gain sentience.
I'm sure there are various other methods, but those are just off the top of my head.

A Transformer Toast(h)er should be by all means lady like, now add to that Walk-man then maybe that's where T's come from.

Toaster Toast(HER) does it with Walkman Walk(MAN) = little Baby TF's, got it now poindexter ;-)

id say they start at the drawing board with designs, then making protype clay models, which would then be used for moulds, once these moulds are made, they will use colourd plastic and injection moulded, once set they will be trimmed and sent down an assembly line where umpa lumpas put them together with screws and springs, also adding details and stickers, then packaged up and shipped around the world to be used as shelf warmers for you to buy

There's also the Generation 2 entry which shows how Cybertron was populated a generation at a time through a process similar to celluar division, with protoforms created from the metal-flesh of a Transformer. Beast Wars introduced the idea of the Protoform, but didn't specify how these came about, although the G2 comics were clearly an influence. These protoforms had an organic spark that brought forth sentience. Some were blank, though, allowing for outside influences to stamp their own designs on these forms.

IDW have, in passing, introduced the concepts of being forged and cold-smelted (or something, I'm doing this from memory) with one being the organic method of creation, the other assuming you were built and given a sprk of life.

Superhero? No, you were right all along. Name's Death's Head. I kill people for a living!
