    Old software help

I'm sure it's possible, but I don't know where to look. Is there any way to get old software online for free, so I can play my older games. I've got an urge for Grim Fandango and Monkey Island 3.

Unless the original publisher provides free versions (like Rockstar did with GTA 1 and 2) you can't get them for free legally.

You could try using VirtualBox with a Windows 98 virtual machine, but I haven't been able to set this up correctly so I can run my older games. Maybe you'll have more luck.

In case you're wondering - VMware doesn't support DirectX for anything before Windows 2000 or XP.

Tried it myself a way back, cost me more nerves than I had. Can be a risky, but like Rodimus said maybe you will have more luck than us.

Have a read, this might clear a few things up..

all you need, if you have windows 7 business is a copy of the VM software. it allows you to run a VM of XP and it's free to download and install.

if not there are others, VMware is one of them. it will need to be setup so it can run with lots of ram and graphics power but you can install any version of windows, linux or mac os as long as you have the licence key and software. it would need to be legal. but if you only have an old win98 key you can download the software from any torrent and use the legal key on it.

The problem with VMware is, at least in Workstation 7.x, very limited DirectX support which you probably need.
Virtual XP Mode, which runs in Virtual PC, has no Direct3D support at all (just tried). DirectDraw works except for fullscreen mode.

As far as I know, VirtualBox officially has the best DirectX support out of the three but it's a pain to setup correctly.

That brings back bad memories and loss of hair.
