Spider-Man guest stars in part 3 of Marvel’s The Transformers, released January 1985.
The Decepticons take Sparkplug back to their mountain base and order him to provide them with a fuel conversion process, all the while Starscream is repeatedly getting on Megatron’s nerves.
The Autobots, meanwhile, return to the Ark to refuel, but not before “O” comes out with the classic line, “Where’d all these rejects from a George Lucas film come from?”
While Sparkplug works, the Decepticon fortress is surrounded by the military and the press, including a young photographer called Peter Parker… using his web-slinging abilities he hitches a lift on Gears’ back just as the Decepticons are demonstrating their superiority to, and contempt for, the human military. When Gears saves a crowd of humans from a tank thrown by Thundercracker, Spider-Man
realises that he’s one of the good guys.
The Autobot cavalry arrives to engage the enemy, but Spidey and Gears go round the back of the mountain on a rescue mission. Working as a team, they manage to get past Rumble, Frenzy, Ravage and Soundwave to snatch Sparkplug from under Megatron’s nose. However, Sparkplug has already given the Decepticons their fuel, so Megatron happily destroys the floor under Gears to see them plunge down the mountain. Spider-Man leaps after them and is able to catch Sparkplug, but Gears is too heavy and plunges to the valley floor.
The Autobots break off from the battle to collect the remains of Gears, but to the bemusement of the humans they don’t seem too bothered by their friend’s death. Spider-Man asks “How can you all be so cold and unfeeling?” [Newsflash, web-head, they’re ROBOTS! Duhhhh!]
Upon returning to the Ark, Ratchet starts to revive Gears, and Spider-Man swings away to catch a plane. But just as Gears is restored to minimum operating level, he reveals that “Megatron… got what he wanted… from human…”
