Hoist

Written by admin on October 11, 2007 | Characters,Comics,Marvel |

ALLEGIANCE: AUTOBOT
FUNCTION: MAINTENANCE

FIRST APPEARANCE: TRANSFORMERS # 14

“You have to be rolling before you can be fighting.”

Profile: Everybody must submit to his maintenance schedule, even Optimus
Prime, and no excuse is ever good enough for Hoist. And he has a good reason
for being so strict: even though his job usually keeps him away from the front
lines, he knows how important it is that all the Autobot warriors are operating
at peak efficiency when they engage in battle. He genuinely enjoys his job,
as indicated by the jovial manner in which he performs it. And he’s good at
his job, too; whether the problem is a full engine overhaul or the smallest
leaky gasket, his comrades are confident that Hoist will find it.

Abilities: As a tow truck, Hoist can haul up to 400,000 pounds. In robot
mode, he is one of the strongest of the Autobots. From his wrist sockets, he
can launch heat-seeking missiles up to 4.5 miles. The full spectrum multi-sensor
module he wears behind his head can determine an object’s composition, density,
tensile strength, energy properties and often even its function with a mere
sweep of its triple beams. The beams have an operating range of 1200 yards,
making Hoist an effective and valued scout at times.

Weaknesses: Hoist’s dedication to his job sometimes blinds him to the
precedence that armed conflict often takes over it. He lacks speed in vehicular
mode, and has a high fuel consumption rate.

The Quintessons

Written by admin on | Characters,Comics,Marvel |

LLEGIANCE: UNICRON

SUB-GROUP: QUINTESSON
FUNCTION: ENFORCER
FIRST APPEARANCE: THE TRANSFORMERS: THE MOVIE # 2

“Everyone is guilty until proven innocent – and even then he’s guilty!”

Profile: As cruel as a weasel toying with its prey and as persistent
as a bloodhound on the trail of a fugitive, the Quintessons are the merciless
enforcers of Unicron’s will. They hunt down those who try to escape Unicron’s
wrath. Once the victim is captured, he is doomed. Guilty or innocent, the verdict
is always the same – death.

The Quintessons are composed of Guards, Gatekeepers, and one five-headed Judge.
The Quintessons are the cruel masters of the endless legions of Sharkticons
which carry out the Quintessons’ verdict.

Weaknesses: The Quintessons are few in number compared to the Sharkticons,
and deathly afraid of them, for if the Sharkticons should revolt, there is nothing
the Quintessons could do to stop them.

The Transformers UK Issue #113

Packrat

Written by admin on | Characters,Comics,Marvel,News |

ALLEGIANCE: MAXIMAL

FUNCTION: THIEF
FIRST APPEARANCE: TALES FROM THE BEAST WARS TRANSFORMERS # 1

“Don’t just take the goods, take the credit, too.”

Profile: Although many of his enemies (and comrades) call him the nastiest
of names, they can’t take away the fact that Packrat’s a top-notch thief. With
a cunning nature that rivals Megatron and a speed which astounds even the swiftest
of Maximals, Packrat is efficient at getting the job done. He strikes from the
shadows with lethal intensity, accomplishes the mission objectives, and quickly
melts back into the depths of the jungle. Packrat makes up for his lack of strength
through courage and ingenuity as a fighter. Although naturally quiet, he is
outfitted with a sonic dampening field which makes him virtually undetectable
by the Predacons. Packrat prefers to work alone so that he can complete the
mission by his own rules. He is the ultimate glory hound. Although small in
size, Packrat has an ego the size of one of Cybertron’s moons. His ego is fed
through the continual bluffing of all who surround him, whether friend or foe.
His penchant for stealing is surpassed only by his desire to let everyone know
he did it. These acts of bluffing cause unease and distrust among his teammates
aboard the Axalon. His quarters are full of stolen artifacts, broken pieces
of equipment, and other treasures from various looting escapades. Whether Packrat
is sent out on a solo mission or as backup, no one is quite sure if they can
count on him. Despite his bravado, Packrat has a low self-esteem and is constantly
trying to prove himself and gain the respect of the other Maximals. With the
recent addition of the Energon armor, devised by Fractyl of the Predacons, Packrat
saw the opportunity to gain this much sought after respect. However, at Rhinox’s
insistence, he voluntarily gave up the armor, thereby saving himself and consequently,
his teammates.

Abilities: In beast mode, Packrat can travel up to 35 kph while cruising,
and up to 45 kph in short bursts. His sonic dampening field creates an aura
that has a mean sound level of 5 decibels. If he is not seen, Packrat can approach
within 2 feet of his target without being detected. Packrat possesses superb
night vision which helps him in nocturnal or underground jobs. His Energon armor,
in robot mode, can repel fields up to 10 gigajoules per square centimeter, and
subsequently can last infinitely longer in robot mode than all other Maximals
or Predacons. His weapon of choice is a sonic disrupter which shatters the exostructure
of his target.

Weaknesses: Packrat has a low self-esteem due to the constant mistrust
everyone has towards him. Due to this breakdown of teamwork, Packrat usually
cannot rely on anyone to cover him during a battle. The Energon armor works
well with small to moderate doses of the energy source, but behaves violently
when placed within range of raw Energon. The resulting Energon-anti-Energon
reaction ends in a detonation with the force of a thousand tons of explosives,
destroying both the armor and the host.

Jazz

Written by admin on | Characters,Comics,Marvel |

ALLEGIANCE: AUTOBOT
FUNCTION: SPECIAL OPERATIONS, SABOTEUR
FIRST APPEARANCE: TRANSFORMERS # 1

“Do it with style or don’t bother doing it.”

Profile: Jazz would be cruising down Bourbon Street in New
Orleans or be double-parked outside a cellar club in Greenwich Village soaking
up the local sounds if he weren’t in the middle of a war. He’s a confirmed Earthen
culture junkie – he can talk fluently about ballet or break-dancing (although
he prefers the latter), and he’s always on the lookout for more stuff to turn
on to. His knowledge of Earthen ways and his easy adaptability to Earthen environments
make him the indispensable right-hand man of his commander, Optimus Prime. He’s
often given the most dangerous assignments, and, with characteristic coolness,
usually pulls them off using something out of his seemingly bottomless bag of
tricks. He’d rather dazzle you with style than accomplish a mission the easy
way.

Abilities: In robot mode, Jazz can use his solar-powered
photon rifle with deadly accuracy up to a distance of .9 miles from target,
and he can shoot it from virtually any physical position he may be in with equal
effectiveness. He can also use a combination of his overhead flame-thrower (maximum
range of 250 feet), full-spectrum front grill beacon and 180 dB stereo speakers
to create a spectacular, disorienting light and sound show. He has been known
to glide for more than 3000 feet using his rear-mounted ailerons. His biggest
asset is the versatility and cleverness he possesses in using the resources
at his disposal.

Weaknesses: Although Jazz’s firepower and strength are weak
relatives to that of some of the other Autobots, he more than compensates with
his daring and skill. He’s prone to be distracted from his primary assignment
by Earthen behavior patterns that he finds interesting. This sometimes leads
to disastrous consequences.

Bluestreak

Written by admin on | Characters,Comics,Marvel |

ALLEGIANCE: AUTOBOT

FUNCTION: GUNNER
FIRST APPEARANCE: TRANSFORMERS # 1

“I never met a Decepticon I didn’t dislike.”

Profile: Conversations don’t come easy when Bluestreak is around. His
talent for incessant and often inane talk tends to drown out those close by,
but at least his gregarious manner serves to lighten the otherwise grim situation
of the Autobots. What is not widely known is the underlying reason for his endless
droning: to hide the fact that he hates war. Despite his formidable weaponry
and his blazing speed, he is basically not a warrior type. Autobot Commander
Optimus Prime’s faith in him helps sustain Bluestreak in the heat of battle.
Optimus knows that Bluestreak will be forever haunted by the memory of his witnessing
the total destruction of his city back on Cybertron by the Decepticons. He was
the lone survivor. “There’s some demons runnin’ loose inside that boy,”
says Hound, “and sometimes I think they grab hold of him and won’t let
him go.”

Abilities: In automobile mode, Bluestreak is among the fastest Autobots.
He can sustain speeds of up to 150 mph for more than 12 hours. In robot mode,
he carries twin shoulder-mounted rocket launchers, each capable of hurling a
shell containing four independently targetable warheads a distance of 8.3 miles
with a maximum error margin of 12 feet from target at that distance. Each warhead
possesses the concussive force equivalent to 150 lbs. of TNT. His ion-charge
disperser rifle electrifies a line of particles in the air in the direction
in which it is pointed. By its nature, its accuracy is limited, but it can shoot
an electrified particle beam, resembling blue lightning, a distance of 12 miles
and punch a 10 foot hole in a cinder-block wall. The electrical charge of a
single bolt can be as high as 80,000 volts.

Weaknesses: As powerful and threatening as he is, Bluestreak can be
completely undone at times by his disdain for combat and his reluctance to fight.

IDW Beast Wars Profiles Book teaser

Written by admin on | Beast Wars,Comics,IDW Publishing,News |

Ben Yee, has posted some interesting information on the upcoming Beast Wars Profiles Book that are coming out later this year. He has posted the following on his board:

Hi folks,This project is still in the works and not due out for a bit, so I can’t give the farm away. Just wanted to offer some factoids

  • I am writing a Beast Wars profiles book with Simon Furman (some folks wondered if it was some *other* Ben Yee).
  • Issue #1 of the BW mini gives you a hint as to whether Japanese characters will be in the books.
  • The profiles will NOT just be the guys (and gals) who appeared in the TV show (because that would be one very thin book).
  • There will be G1 homages and yes, characters (who became BW characters) in the book such as Grimlock. However, they are in the minority.
  • This is not some haphazard assembly of characters. Before writing a single profile, Simon and I worked up an entire backstory for the Maxies and Preds taking the TV show and Beast Machines (to a lesser degree) into account.

I hope you all enjoy what you see as time goes along. We are trying to produce something cool with these profiles. If I can reveal more (or even better, hopefully IDW themselves reveal more in the coming months) I’ll post it on the front page or in here.

Hot Rod

Written by admin on | Characters,Comics,Marvel |

ALLEGIANCE: AUTOBOT
FUNCTION: CAVALIER

FIRST APPEARANCE: THE TRANSFORMERS: THE MOVIE # 1

“My actions speak louder than words.”

Profile: Hot Rod is the all-American-boy Autobot. Not too sweet, not
too sharp, not too snotty… not a goodie-goodie, but basically a typical adolescent
who has dreams of doing great stuff and being as heroic and important as Optimus
Prime and other famous and revered top Autobots. He tends to follow rules until
they bug him – and he sometimes learns, to his regret, that disobeying wasn’t
exactly smart. And he often acts without thinking in an effort to do the right
thing – and this gets him and sometimes his friends in trouble. But he’s not
afraid when trouble does arrive and is a brave and honorable fighter and friend.
He is especially close to Kup, the grizzled old mentor of an Autobot, although
he sometimes resents hearing “wisdom.” And he likes Daniel, the Earth
kid, a lot. (In a way, Hot Rod is big brother to Daniel – a role model – and
Hot Rod knows it and takes the responsibility seriously.) In robot or automotive
mode, Hot Rod is sometimes hot-headed, but always a well-meaning, admirable
“lad” and popular with all who know him.

Abilities: He carries two photon lasers that temporarily electromagnetize
an enemy robot’s microcircuits. Speed: 120 mph. Range: 4 miles.

Weaknesses: Hot Rod’s impulsive actions often get him into trouble.
