SDCC 09: New IDW Transformers Comic Series

Transformers Nefarious SDCC 09It’s the San Diego Comic-Con 09 this week, so it would only seem logical for IDW Publishing to spill the beans on what is in store for the future of Transformers comics.

Transformers: Nefarious is a mini-series focusing on a new organization with ‘nefarious’ designs on the Transformers. Continuing on from Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen, there will also be more on Soundwave and Ravage.

The series is written by Simon Furman with art by Carlos Magno and will be out early next year.

In an interview with IGN, Simon talks about the series being self contained, how they aren’t entirely sure on the number of issues, how the series links into Revenge of the Fallen, and the possibility of Primus or Unicron appearing in the movie-verse.

Dengeki Hobby magazine has reveal the latest Transformers: Masterpiece from TakaraTomy. Unfortunately, it isn’t a new release, however it is a repackage of most fans favourite character, Grimlock. Masterpiece MP-08 Grimlock will now be released as Masterpiece MP-08x King Grimlock!

The figure will now come in a special comic style package, with new accessories, including a crown, sword and a gun. No longer included are the apron, necktie, tray, glasses, or transfer device.

The figure will be a Toy HobbyMarket exclusive, retail for 13,000 Yen, and come out in late December.

Tformers have a photo from the magazine.

di Bonaventura Talks Transformers 3

Transformers, Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen and G.I. Joe: Rise of Cobra producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura has recently discussed what lies ahead for Transformers 3 in an interview with Rotten Tomatoes.

He talks about the possibility of Paramount keeping the release date of July 2011, therefore going ahead with the film without Michael Bay, the negatives that Revenge of the Fallen has received and his thoughts on Unicron appearing in future films.

15th Auto Assembly 2009 Guest Announced!

Written by Big Bot on | Auto Assembly,Conventions,News | Tags:

The UK and Europe’s largest Transformers convention, Auto Assembly, is getting another special guest for the 2009 convention with comic artist Jon Davis-Hunt, who has worked for Titan Comics in the UK and IDW Comics in North America. He will only be appearing on Sunday, but with be signing you favourite bits of merchandise.

Hi everyone,

As the date for Auto Assembly 2009 draws nearer, we are still adding to our extensive list of activities throughout the weekend and we are now pleased to announce that we are now being joined by our FIFTEENTH guest for the convention…

Joining us for the SUNDAY ONLY is comic artist Jon Davis-Hunt. Jon has recently joined the team working on Titan Magazine’s Transformers comic as their new regular artist for their UK-originated strip, although he has produced cover artwork for them previously. He has also worked for IDW on the adaptation of Revenge Of The Fallen and was one of the artists for 2000 AD. Prior to switching to the comic industry, Jon previously worked in the video games industry.

Jon will be taking to the stage along with some of our other comic guests on Sunday (our comic panels will be split throughout the weekend) and he will be joining the rest of our comic guests in our guest area to sign autographs and meet fans.

Jon is joining what is the biggest ever line-up of guests seen at a European Transformers event which currently includes our two guests of honour Gregg Berger (G1 Grimlock), Ian James Corlett (Cheetor), and our comic guests – Andrew Wildman (Saturday only), Simon Williams, Staz Johnson, Nick Roche, Liam Shalloo, Lew Stringer (Saturday only), Jason Cardy, Kat Nicholson, Lee Bradley, Lee Sullivan, Mike Collins, and Kris Carter. As we have three guests who will only be able to attend for a single day, the ONLY way you will get to meet all of our guests this year is to attend for the FULL weekend!

We have a very limited number of single tickets available for the Sunday, but plenty of weekend tickets available. More single day passes for Saturday may be released soon but with the convention being less than four weeks away, you need to hurry to pre-register for what will be the biggest ever Transformers convention that Europe has ever seen!

Couple of Simon Furman Blog Updates

Written by Big Bot on July 20, 2009 | Comics,IDW Publishing,News | Tags: ,

Writer Simon Furman has been back on the blogging, with news of his appearances at the San Diego Comic-Con this coming weekend and for his next Transformers comic, All Hail Megatron #13, due out this week.

Here’s Simon’s schedule for SDCC 09, so bringing along your books and other merchandise to get them signed.

Friday 24th: may or may not make it along to the IDW panel at noon. News of my new TF series should already have broken by then, so I’ll be around (though maybe on the sidelines) to answer any (well, within reason) questions.
Sat 25th: 3-4PM at the DC/Wildstorm stand, then 4-5PM at the DK booth (2913-G in the Lucasfilm Pavilion). I may have to run to be there on time!!
Sun 26th: 10-11AM at the IDW stand, where I’ll be available to sign copies of All Hail Megatron #13 (and whatever else), then 2-3PM at the DK booth (Transformers: The Movie Universe, TF Ultimate Guide et al).
That’s it for the moment. Keep an eye out for more updates, right here, over the next week!

The Transformers: All Hail Megatron #13 is the start of 4 issues that contain 2x 11 page stories per issue. Simon’s story contains art from Don Figueroa, and features Optimus Prime and Ironhide.

If you’re going along to Auto Assembly 2009 next month in the UK, look out for the exclusive cover for AHM #13.

Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen Passes $700 Million Worldwide

Unsurprisingly, Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen has now passed the $700 million mark at the box office, having made $703.7 million, and is within touching distance of the first movie’s $708.3 million total.

This is equally impressive when you consider the current economic climate, and the fact that the dollar is worth less in most international territories than 2 years ago.

Domestically, the film made another $24.2 million in its third weekend to reach a total of $339.2 million, passing the $319 million made by the first film. Brüno and Ice Age 3 made larger amounts over the weekend.

Transformers: Defiance Returns to NYTimes Best Seller List

Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen: Defiance, the second prequel series to this summers movie, has AGAIN made it into the New York Times Best Seller List, entering at no. 6 for 4th July.

Defiance focuses on the origins of Cybertron and the beginnings of the war, being set before both films. I won’t spoil it for people, but it will flesh out the actual Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen film, with some more characterisation and better explanation of certain plot points.

The series is written Chris Mowry with art from Dan Khanna.

The Future of IDW Transformers Comics – Whats Coming?

Written by Big Bot on | Comics,IDW Publishing,News | Tags: , ,

IDW Editor-in-Chief Chris Ryall recently appeared on the radio, and answered some questions about IDW Publishing’s future plans for the Transformers brand. He has also answered some questions in this thread on the IDW forum.

In November, IDW will release Transformers Continuum, which will bring all readers up to speed on IDW’s Transformers comics released so far, which is an idea many fans have recommended for a long time. It isn’t know if this is one issue or a series.

Also be on the look out for the San Diego Comic-Con in 2 weeks, which will have 3 Transformers announcements, 2 of which will come as a big surprise and one that fans feel they already know about. I’ll let you speculate on what these may be.

There will also be some “movie news”, which probably consists of the next movie comic, Tales of the Fallen.

Transformers: The Complete Series – Matrix of Leadership Edition DVD Review

transformersmatrixdvdThe Digital Bits have, like lots of other fans in North America, got their hands on Shout! Factory’s Transformers: The Complete Series – 25th Anniversary Matrix of Leadership Edition DVD Set and have provided an in-depth review. It seems the set is well worth the $140 price and should be enjoyed by all.

Remember when all the major TV networks would run a preview night of their new Saturday morning line-up (with their biggest stars as hosts) the day before the premieres? In the early 80s, big new kids shows with toy tie-ins all took a similar route on syndicated UHF stations. G.I. Joe, Transformers, and many others had 2-hour prime-time premieres supported by heavy advertising campaigns. Saturday and weekday afternoon ‘toons were a really big deal back then – something that’s hard to replicate in today’s age of multiple 24-hour kids cable networks. Transformers was among the best of these shows, and it’s still highly watchable as an adult. I’ve been digging out my old toys, are they’re still just as cool as they were back then. If you’re a fan, this box set may be a little pricey, but it’s still definitely recommended. Enjoy, and roll out!

The set contains all 98 G1 episodes and a load of extra features spread over 16 discs, with some fancy packaging so that it looks good on you shelf.

If you live in the USA or Canada, you can pick up the set here.

Plans for Transformers 3 Already Underway

Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen may have only just been released, but Paramount Pictures and Dreamworks SKG are already planning on Transformers 3 for Friday, 1st July 2011.

Back in March, director Michael Bay mentioned he would only do Transformers 3 if it was release a year later in 2012, which ultimately brings the key question, do Paramount wait at extra year to keep Bay or rush out a sequel?

Associated Content have discussed this point, and it seems we will be waiting 3 years, around the London 2012 Olympics, for more bot action. Despite Bay being back, the extra year should give the writers more time to flesh out a story that is more coherent.
