Michael Bay transforms his mind for a fourth movie

Written by Darren 'Starscream' Jamieson on | Transformers 4 (2013) |

Michael Bay may have talked about a need to walk away from the Transformers franchise but it seems that he just can’t get enough, with negotiations under way for a further sequel.

Before the release of Transformers: Dark of the Moon, both Bay and star Shia LaBeouf boldly stated that that would be that in terms of their contributions to the series.

Money speaks louder than words, however, and there is no denial from Bay’s camp that he will make a return. Reports suggest that he close to signing a deal with Paramount Pictures for him to direct the fourth instalment.

After the second movie, Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen, Bay seemed hell bent on taking some time off to work on a project closer to his heart, Pain & Gain. However, Steven Spielberg, with help from the studio manager, twisted his arm and Bay hasn’t looked back six years later. This may be partly why he was so adamant that he wouldn’t be directing a fourth movie.

There is somewhat of a plan for the movie as producer Don Murphy has openly quashed any idea that a prequel is on the cards. It will instead focus its story on human characters in a bid to breathe some new life into the series. Due to what happened to the characters at the end of the third movie, it would be a challenge to continue the series in the way that it has played out so far. Therefore, new characters and major changes can be expected. We may even see stories we recognise from the animated series, all those years ago.

Transformers star Tyrese Gibson is a big fan

Written by Darren 'Starscream' Jamieson on October 19, 2011 | Transformers movie (2007),Transformers: Dark of the Moon,Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen |

Tyrese GibsonTransformers star Tyrese Gibson has stated that he is a fan of the Transformers franchise and has even gone as far as to say that he watches it in his underwear whilst eating a bowl of lucky charms. A little too much information possibly, but it’s nice to hear that he’s a fan. Apparently, he even has a tattoo of an Autobot symbol on his right arm. That may just enter him into the realm of super fan – although I have one on my left arm!

The next movie in the series, as far as we know, will be made without director Michael Bay as well as its main star, Shia LaBeouf. Gibson isn’t looking to be the focal point of everything which takes place in this next instalment as he is just happy to be involved in a project based on one of his favourite childhood cartoons.

Gibson speaks highly of the first three movies, praising the writers who are also involved in this project. He says that the writing team will be working to reboot the franchise and feels confident that they are up to the challenge. Gibson, of course, has been making a name for himself in the movie world having been involved in Dark of the Moon as well as Fast Five. He is also reminding people of his vocal talents with his upcoming, fifth studio album, ‘Open Invitation’.

Gibson says of his new album that it’s real singing as opposed to sounding like (wait for it) a robot. Transformers fans may now come across his music and new album and gain Gibson some more fans, especially if he impresses in a challenging role without the former director and leading star.

Transformers: Fall of Cybertron

Written by Darren 'Starscream' Jamieson on October 18, 2011 | News,Video Games |

For all those who enjoyed playing War For Cyberton, you’ll be pleased to hear that a ‘natural successor rather than a true sequel’ is on the way in the shape of ‘Fall of Cybertron’.

The details so far are somewhat sketchy from the visuals we have seen on the cover of US magazine Game Informer, but Fall of Cybertron is believed to be the next Transformers game being released by Hasbro, and is already causing quite a stir following the release of the trailer (below) starring Grimlock.

What to expect is still very much unknown but the press release states that the new games is about:

“the final, darkest hours of the civil war between the Autobots and Decepticons as they fight for control of their dying planet, ultimately leading to their storied exodus from home.”

The fact that Grimlock has been mentioned sounds like a positive for those who like robot Tyrannosaurs but it also sounds as though the plot of the game has, at least in part, moved to Earth.

War For Cybertron may have showed us only a glimpse of what a Transformers game is capable of but it has undoubtedly been the best effort so far. It is an immensely enjoyable game to play. The tie-in game with Dark Of The Moon didn’t satisfy fans but the two Cybertron games are totally unrelated and far more effort seems to have been put into making them.

Fall of Cyberton is due for release is the Autumn of 2012 on PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, with no news yet on it being released on other formats. The new Wii U console will no doubt also be a format the game will be released on.

Hasbro state that they have created an original storyline, working with Activision, with battles that lead up to the exodus of the Transformers machines from Cybertron. We will have to wait and see just how original their storyline is when the game is released in time for Christmas.

Transforming novels with Michael Irvine

Written by Darren 'Starscream' Jamieson on October 12, 2011 | News |

The hungry market for Transformers has prompted the back story in the form of a novel penned by hand-picked author, Michael Irvine. Published last Tuesday, Transformers Exiles, which is a sequel to Tranformers: Exodus, goes back millions of years before the Transformers landed on Earth.

Irvine is a veteran writer who has also written on other super hero characters such as Batman and Iron Man. Hasbro even sought out his talent to give new blood to the multimedia franchise with a solid foundational story. Hasbro are very much aware that continuity is not what it could be in the Transformers timeline and it is an issue they are attempting to resolve for the fans.

Transformers fans who grew up watching their heroes are very knowledgeable when it comes to the back stories so Irvine will have to tread very carefully if he and Hasbro are to succeed. Irvine understands that you have to appreciate and respect the passion the fans have. However, as important as it is not to step on any toes, you also don’t want to tell the same story over and over.

The Transformers task is the latest for Irvine in a string of comic book projects. Many of his peers would consider him to have a dream job. He grew up reading about superheroes in comics and novels or watching them in cartoons so he understands the views of the fans as he is one himself. In fact, comics are what inspired him to write in the first place. Irvine is also scheduled to write the novel adaption of the upcoming Tintin movie.
